As late-summer vacations wrap up and Wall Street gets back to business, the August jobs report takes center stage, potentially shaping the trajectory of monetary policy for the remainder of the year.

At a Glance

•   The news: The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the August nonfarm payrolls report on Friday.

•   The context: The report will serve as one of the final ingredients shaping the Federal Reserve's September interest rate decision.

•   Your move: We could see volatility in interest rate-sensitive assets after the jobs report is released. For instance, a cooler-than-expected report could reinforce expectations the Fed will leave rates unchanged: potentially boosting growth stocks (e.g. SFY) and long-duration bonds (e.g. TLT). On the other hand, an upside surprise in hiring or wage growth would probably push the odds of a rate hike higher, to the detriment of those same assets.

The jobs report for August marks the return of market-moving macro news.

In particular, economists will be focusing on job growth, wage growth, as well as the balance between labor supply and demand. The last jobs report was mixed, as was the market reaction: On one hand, the economy lost jobs and wages grew less than expected. On the other hand, the unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in over a year.

Overall, a decisive report would go a long way to dictating market direction, but we haven't had a ton of clear cut signals in recent economic data. Some Fed officials would probably love to hold off on making any changes at their next meeting, focusing on bigger picture updates to their operational frameworks instead (see Chairman Kevin Warsh's task forces). If the data forces their hand, however, they may not have the luxury of waiting.
