FAQ
How much does it cost to open an account?
$0. There is no fee to open any SoFi Invest account (Self-Directed, Robo-Advisor, or IRA). There is also no minimum balance required to maintain the account or avoid fees.
Does SoFi charge fees for trading stocks?
We offer $0 commission trades for all U.S. listed stocks, ETFs, and options in your Self-Directed account. Certain minimal regulatory fees still apply to sales, as mandated by the SEC and FINRA.
Are there annual fees for having a SoFi IRA?
It depends on the investing method:
- Self-Directed IRA: $0 annual or maintenance fee.
- Robo (Automated) IRA: The account will incur the 0.25% Annual Advisory Fee, which is charged for the professional management of the portfolio.
Are there any hidden fees I should know about?
No, we believe in full transparency. While commissions on stocks and ETFs are $0, there are a few service-related fees (like an avoidable $25 inactivity fee and a $100 IRA closing fee) and standard regulatory fees that you will find clearly outlined in the tables above.
What is the minimum amount needed to start investing?
With Self-Directed Investing, via SoFi Securities, you can get started with as little as $5. With Robo Investing, via SoFi Wealth, you need a minimum of $50 to start investing.
Why is there a management fee for Robo Investing but not for Self-Directed Investing?
The fee for Automated Investing covers the essential service of professional portfolio management. The 0.25% advisory fee pays for algorithm-driven features like:
- Creating and managing your personalized portfolio.
- Automatic rebalancing to maintain your target risk level.
- Dividend reinvestment.
In Self-Directed Investing, you manage your own portfolio, so there is no management fee.
Does it cost money to transfer my account to or from SoFi?
Transferring to SoFi: $0 – We do not charge any fee for incoming transfers (ACATs). If your previous broker charges you a fee, we will reimburse up to $75 when you transfer $5,000 or more.
Transferring Out of SoFi: There is a $100 fee for a full or partial transfer (ACAT Out) to another brokerage.
