Student loans and major life decisions

Student loan debt can be life-changing. On the one hand, you have an education that may enable you to follow the career of your dreams. But on the other hand, your debt burden can weigh on you.

For some borrowers it could even mean delaying life milestones, such as buying a house or starting a family. Making matters worse, prices on everything have soared over the past years, the housing market can be tough to enter, and child care is expensive everywhere you look.

Tackling the burden

Budget: Look for areas you can reduce spending and funnel that money to loans.

Repayment plans: You may be able to take advantage of repayment plans that are based on your income, or refinance loans to get a better monthly rate.

Deferment and forbearance: If you’re struggling to pay federal loans, you may be eligible for deferment or forbearance, which could pause or lower payments for a period of time.
