What is an IPO?

An IPO, or initial public offering, refers to the process whereby a privately-owned company offers shares of stock for sale to the general public for the first time. A company is not legally allowed to sell stock to the public until the transaction has been registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or procures an exemption.
