If you’re looking for help to pay for college, you’re going to need to fill out a FAFSA form.
FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The form is free to fill out, and can provide federal and state student grants, work-study jobs, and loans. Many colleges also use the form to determine their own scholarships and grants. Learn more about what changed on the form this year.
The 2023-24 FAFSA has a deadline of June 30, but many states and colleges have earlier deadlines, so don’t procrastinate.
What you need to fill out the form
You’ll likely create an FSA ID that allows you to apply and manage your aid.
To fill out the 2024-25 form, it’s a good idea to have the following information handy: your Social Security number, as well as your parent’s if you’re a dependent, tax returns, current balances of bank accounts, net worth of investments and businesses, and records of child support (if applicable). You should also be prepared to list at least one school that will be sent your information.
You can apply online or fill out the paper version and mail it to the Education Department.
