Stocks remain choppy but finish higher after cooler-than-expected inflation print

•   US stocks rose Tuesday after the November CPI came in below expectations. This suggests the Fed is making progress in its fight against inflation. The November CPI rose 0.1% from October, and 7.1% on an annual basis.

•   Oil prices rose amid the rollback of some COVID-19 rules in China. That trend, as well as the prospect of slower inflation, have led to increased expectations for demand.

•   The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index rose in November. The survey found that, while prices remain high, business owners’ inflation concerns are easing.

What to be on the lookout for today

•   The Federal Reserve will announce its next decision in regards to interest rates. The general consensus is that a 50-basis-point hike will be enacted, following four straight 75-basis-point hikes. This will impact interest rates on everything from mortgages to credit cards.

•   Homebuilding company Lennar (LEN) will release its third quarter results. Investors will be looking for more clarity as to the state of the housing market.

The federal Student Loan Debt Relief program has been blocked, but there are still other programs for forgiveness available to those eligible.

In the August statement, the White House said it will focus on helping borrowers who have worked at a nonprofit, in the military, or in federal, state, tribal, or local government.

The government has been offering forgiveness on student loan debt held by people whose jobs serve the public for a number of years.

However, many criticized these existing programs as too hard to understand and qualify for, and subsequently too few people received the loan repayments. The Biden Administration made efforts to ā€œcut the red tapeā€ and strengthen this type of forgiveness.

ā€œBecause of complex eligibility restrictions, historic implementation failures, and poor counseling given to borrowers, many borrowers have not received the credit they deserve for their public service,ā€ said the White House.

Our student loan forgiveness guide covers all existing loan forgiveness and repayment programs for some of the 45 million Americans paying off their student debt.
