Following record-high expenses incurred by Hurricane Ian, Florida has seen many major insurance companies withdraw from its market. And in California, the increasing threat of wildfires led national insurance giants State Farm and Allstate (ALL) to cease providing residents with new homeowners coverage.
Homeowners in these states, as well as other at-risk areas like Louisiana, are staring down premiums almost four times higher than their counterparts in safer regions. To fill this growing void, an increasing number of states are considering establishing their own insurance providers as a last resort for homeowners left high and dry.

On the plus side, insurance premiums haven’t actually risen much nationally in the last year — only 1.6%, according to the Consumer Price Index.
