Your Next Job Training Could Be Run by AI

The Raise

Synthesia, a startup that uses artificial intelligence to streamline the process of making marketing videos, just raised $90 million in Series C round. This funding round was led by Accel and NVIDIA (NVDA), with participation from Kleiner Perkins, FirstMark Capital, MMC, and GV (GOOGL).

With its latest funding round, Synthesia has eclipsed $1 billion in total funding. The AI startup plans to use this fresh capital to improve the speed of its platform, as well as the expressiveness and realism of its most innovative feature: digital AI-driven avatars designed to narrate its videos.

Digital AI Videos

Creating quality marketing or advertising videos is typically a costly and highly-intensive process that traditionally involves writing a script, hiring actors, filming, and editing. But Synthesia’s solution aims to save companies from pouring countless resources into marketing videos.

Synthesia uses AI-powered tools to empower users to easily create professional-grade videos by creating realistic AI “avatars” capable of providing narration and an expressive video element to a script instantaneously.

The startup hasn’t disclosed any revenue figures yet. But it has over 50,000 customers who have generated over 15 million videos on its platform, with clients including the likes of Tiffany’s (LVMH) and Moody’s Analytics (MCO).

Generating AI Videos

Synthesia’s solution is ideal for digital marketing or advertising videos, as well as instructional tutorials, training experiences, customer onboarding, and much more.

Still, some are concerned about the implications of investing in technology that creates realistic-looking videos featuring fake people, suggesting it could be used to proliferate false information. The startup is adamant that it vets all customers, has a disinformation team in place, and prohibits its tech from being used to create “political, sexual, personal, criminal and discriminatory content.”

So if you’ve been tasked with creating a video and don’t have bottomless resources to throw at it — or simply want to see how an AI avatar sounds narrating the novel you wrote — it might be worth giving Synthesia a look.
