The Workplace Will Never Be the Same

Many people believe that hard work will lead to success. But in America’s post-pandemic workforce, this idea has changed, and you can’t blame it on just one generation.

While the labor market has rebounded from the shock of the pandemic lockdown, the advent of mass hybrid and remote work, and a new idea of non-salary benefits ranging from vacation allowance to mental health benefits, have changed the way Americans choose their jobs.

While Gen Z workers may be more overt about demanding certain work-life boundaries, people of all ages have been reexamining the work-life balance, increasingly in favor of life over work. The number of people finding meaning in their jobs has fallen too, according to findings from the PEW Research Center.

For companies it’s harder to make employees show up at the office, even with return mandates in place. Higher salaries for in-office jobs are only helping so much, as a quarter of the workforce would sacrifice 15% of their salary in exchange for flexible working hours, according to a study by Owl Labs .

Working from home has its perks, but also necessitates a setup that allows you to be as productive as you would be in the office, be it a second screen, or a home office. Offsetting that investment could be less money spent on lunches and commutes.

In a larger sense, this trend is affecting migration patterns across the U.S., with people choosing places with lower cost of living to do their work remotely.
