Hiring Boom

It has been a year of layoffs in corporate America. Hundred thousands of employees were let go so far this year. But it’s not looking dire everywhere: The public sector has been doubling down on its hiring efforts.

The government has added 327,000 jobs in the year to date, already outperforming its 2022 hiring of 275,000 workers. For reference, the U.S. economy as a whole has added just shy of 1.9 million positions this year, meaning government jobs contributed about 17% of the total.

Perks of Public Service

But even stable government jobs are not immune to the trends of today’s hiring landscape, with signing bonuses and four-day workweeks cited as sweeteners to entice job seekers. In addition, government agencies are also revisiting job descriptions, crafting more appealing roles. Agencies are also lowering requirements, and making the application process smoother.

In a year when many companies have been trimming staff and halting new hires, the government is extending a warm — and stable — welcome.
