Remember the Tooth Fairy? Well, she has gotten a pay rise.

Long gone are the days of change left under the pillow. Parents are reaching much further into their wallets today. A poll from Chicago-based Delta Dental Plans Associates found the average value of a single lost tooth rose 16% to $6.23 in 2023. In some cases, the Tooth Fairy even delivers high-end electronics or fancy jewelry today, at times promoting awkward conversations with family about “our” versus “their” tooth fairy, and the display of wealth.

What Are Inchstones?

But it’s not just lost teeth that get rewarded in a bigger way. Internet queries show increasing searches for “inchstones” as opposed to milestones — celebrating a kid’s minor accomplishments. Pinterest (PINS) predicts inchstones will be one of the top parenting trends of this year.

Between September 2021 and August 2023, the social media platform found global searches rose tremendously for things like “my first tooth party”, “end-of-year school party ideas”, and “potty-training rewards ideas”.

It’s parents who are competing on gift giving, but the children who will talk and compare in the end.
