What is Tattourism?

Thanks to the rise of social media, talented tattoo artists are attracting clients from around the world in an emerging new trend coined, “tattourism.”

The ink fad, which has become particularly popular among millennials and Gen Z, involves traveling across states, countries, and even continents for a specific tattoo artist or style.

According to a recent report from the Washington Post, today thousands of people are making transcontinental trips to get their ink. Given tattoo styles can vary by region, some enthusiasts have no choice but to travel if they want something specific.

Social Media Sensations

As a visual form, tattoos translate well to social media content, opening the opportunity for talented tattoo artists to rack up hundreds of thousands or even millions of followers on Instagram (META), TikTok, and other platforms.

Two popular artists, Ceaser Emanuel and Romeo Lacoste, boast 2.4 million and 2 million Instagram followers, respectively.

Tattoo Tourism

According to a recent poll, roughly 50% of people ages 13 to 39 reported having a tattoo as of 2022 — a huge increase compared to a decade ago.

Travel companies, including hotels and cruise lines, have started to take notice of the trend. They are now making efforts to cater to the industry in a variety of ways, such as hosting celebrity artists and opening tattoo shops aboard cruise ships and in resort lobbies.

Given their permanence, today’s consumers are showing they are willing to go to great lengths to secure the perfect personal expression. Chances are the experience will provide an even better story to go along with it.
