Quiet Hiring: How To Use It To Your Advantage

By: Jenny Montoya · January 20, 2023 · Reading Time: 3 minutes

What is Quiet Hiring?

Quiet hiring is when a company fills needs within the workplace by shifting existing employees into new roles, rather than hiring new full-time staff members. In some cases, the company may also hire contractors to fill short-term gaps and cover immediate responsibilities.

One example of quiet hiring is when a company redirects one of its accountants to help with administrative work during the slow season. On the flip side, during the busy tax season, a company might hire a contractor to file the company’s taxes, instead of bringing on a new in-house accountant.

Quiet hiring isn’t a new concept seeing as companies have long used this tactic to reorganize to manage their workforce and overhead. However, given the current economic environment, it’s becoming much more prevalent, and somewhat of a trend that experts predict will become increasingly popular in 2023.

Benefits of Quiet Hiring

For employers, quiet hiring is a tried-and-true method used to stretch the company’s budget during uncertain times. By avoiding the high costs of onboarding and benefits associated with hiring new full-time employees, it saves the company time and money. Meanwhile, it empowers existing employees, providing them more responsibility and potentially even greater fulfillment.

How To Use It

With all of this in mind, there are a number of ways for existing employees to leverage quiet hiring to their advantage. As employers lean into the trend, it might be an ideal time to express interest in handling additional responsibilities for additional compensation.

Also, keep in mind that you can negotiate for more than just a raise. Consider asking for additional perks such as an upgraded job title, a remote or hybrid work schedule, or professional development classes.

Remember, in these times, with quiet hiring on the rise, it may be in your employer’s best interest to promote from within. Provided you can convince them of the value you will add, this could be the golden opportunity to advocate for your professional growth — and that employee parking spot you’ve been eyeing.
