A rising trend among parents is redefining the classic family vacation.

For parents traveling with children, holidays tend to be less about relaxing and more about balancing the competing needs of an entire family. But lately, many parents appear to favor getaways that actually feel like getting away.

Enter wellness travel. These health-focused trips place emphasis on activities promoting fitness and wellbeing, such as yoga, spa therapies, and healthy eating. The shift in preference is likely influenced by parents’ desire to use their time-off as an opportunity for rejuvenation, rather than on another vacation from which they’ll need a vacation.

Holistic Holidays

A telling report from Morning Consult shows parents in particular expressing diminished interest in travel for the purpose of relaxation or cultural exploration. Instead, their focus is shifting toward vacations that prioritize mental and physical health.

Historically, wellness travel has not been aimed at families. But this data illustrates a distinct departure from the norm, showing parents beginning to weigh their own needs equally with those of their children.

To be clear, the shifting preference doesn’t mean parents are leaving their kids behind at home. Instead, they are integrating their personal health requirements into family holidays, and appear eager to engage in wellness activities that can benefit the entire family.

Wellness Wanderlust

When asked about their future travel plans, 1 in 5 adults expressed an intention to travel for the purpose of improving their mental health. Among parents, this figure shot up to about 1 in 3.

This signals the trend’s substantial impact on the travel industry, particularly on adult-catering wellness retreats. Recognizing the shift, many resorts courting wellness travelers are becoming more family-friendly, opening their doors to guests of all ages.

For families, this means hotels and destinations should continue to expand their wellness offerings, broadening the range of memorable and relaxing vacations for children and parents alike. And for the latter in particular, it’s a sign your wellbeing is finally being recognized, leaving the future of family holidays looking a little more zen for all involved.
