Oprah Leaves WeightWatchers Amid Weight Loss Drug Craze

Stepping Down

Oprah Winfrey is stepping down from the WeightWatchers (WW) board of directors.

Her decision to step back from WeightWatchers came a year earlier than her contract stated, though the company maintained there was no disagreement between the two parties. She plans to donate all of her stock to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Oprah spent nearly a decade being involved with the weight-loss company, which is facing fierce competition from weight-loss drugs like Novo Nordisk’s (NOVO) Ozempic and Wegovy. Oprah said in December that she uses a weight-loss drug.

WW vs Novo

Instead of trying to fight the popularity of these drugs, WeightWatchers has attempted to adapt its model in response. The company recently announced multiple initiatives, including a membership plan that connects members already using the drugs with doctors who can prescribe them.

But that doesn’t seem to have been quite enough for investors. WeightWatchers’ stock has been in freefall since the start of 2024, dropping more than 60% in the past two months.
