A New Use Case for EV Batteries

Beefed-Up Batteries

Cleveland-based electric motorcycle startup Land Moto wants customers to use their bike batteries for their home charging needs.

Land’s marquee product, a cross between a motorcycle and an e-bike called the District. But the company isn’t just focused on getting drivers behind the handlebars. It sees many benefits to its batteries, beyond just powering bikes.

The battery comes in a handful of sizes, the largest of which provides around 100 miles of range — and enough battery power to keep a cell phone charged for a few months. If owners used it to run household appliances, it could be an asset during both power outages and road trips.

Beyond the Bike

The startup is not alone in exploring this use case. Other EV makers have touted the prospect of using their vehicles as home batteries too. But given the size and mobility of its battery, Land sees it as a particular selling point. Land recently released a new battery accessory called the Power Tap, which allows users to add outlets and USB-C plugs to the side of the bike.

The company raised $3 million in fresh capital, bringing its total raised cash to $10 million.
