Black Workers Are Still Underrepresented in Tech

Making Progress

Employment, wages, and entrepreneurship for Black workers in America have made major leaps in recent years, and that’s great news. However, Black workers are still underrepresented in one crucial sector: Tech.

This group of Americans comprises just 8% of tech workers, according to a 2023 report from McKinsey . And when it comes to Black executives in tech, the numbers are even starker with a mere 3%.

This is a problem for the industry as a whole, both in terms of fostering and attracting a diverse workforce. In particular, the tech industry’s troublesome bias in artificial intelligence models may be helped by diversifying the workforce itself.

By the Numbers

On the whole, the strong U.S. labor market has also led to improvements among Black workers, but this doesn’t mask the existing disparities between groups.

In April 2023, unemployment among Black Americans hit an all-time low of 4.8%, and even though it has ticked up again, it remains historically low. It must be pointed out here that the Black unemployment rate remains substantially higher than for any other demographic, after being slower to recover from the pandemic peak.
