The Battle for the Fastest Grocery Delivery Is Heating Up

Winning Customers Back

The biggest battle for grocery chains isn’t who has your favorite cereal, it’s who can deliver your order the fastest.
For years, major retailers like Walmart (WMT), Target (TGT), and Kroger (KR) have lagged behind Amazon’s (AMZN) speedy delivery times. This has allowed Amazon to dominate as customers flocked to the convenience of rapid deliveries.

But the game is changing again, as other retailers offer membership models with perks in an effort to lure customers back in.

A Competitive Offering

Last week Target announced Target Circle 360, a new membership program that offers free same-day delivery for orders over $35 and free 2-day shipping. Sound familiar? Free 2-day shipping has been one of Amazon Prime’s biggest selling points for years.

The same goes for Walmart and Kroger, which are now offering their own respective delivery-centric membership plans.

Having hundreds of brick-and-mortar locations gets expensive in an age where customers prefer to take their shopping online. But big box retailers are successfully turning their physical locations back into a competitive advantage. A network of nationwide stores allows them to offer a broad range of items for customers with the convenience of local delivery.
