AI Tech Threatens Women Without Degrees

Incoming Job Loss

Emerging technologies like generative artificial intelligence are already changing the way we work in some industries. Over time they’re expected to eliminate hundreds of thousands. But some groups will be more affected by that than others.

The bulk of these job losses could hit women without college degrees particularly badly, according to a new report by the think tank Third Way.

Women-Dominated Roles at Risk

Nearly two-thirds, or 60%, of the jobs lost due to disruptive technology will be “middle-wage” jobs, according to projections by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This would include administrative assistants, office clerks, and customer service reps. Statistically, these roles tend to be dominated by women. On top of that, nearly all jobs that are at risk are those that don’t require a college degree.

She-Cession?

Over the coming decade, the job market could see a schism. While middle-wage jobs remain at risk of being replaced by technology, significant growth is expected in two areas: low-wage positions that pay less than $37,000 and high-wage positions that typically require a degree, changing the landscape for America’s middle earners.
