Robotic Revolution

Automation is making big waves in the meatpacking sector, with companies like Smithfield (SFD) and Tyson (TSN) leading the charge.

The collective industry is investing billions of dollars in automating more challenging jobs to improve safety, cut costs, and address ongoing labor shortages.

Automation Advantages

Smithfield is the largest pork processor in the U.S. with around 50,000 employees. But shortages of skilled workers have also hit this industry.

On top of that, automation can address efficiency, not to mention worker safety as it helps keep humans away from the demanding and somewhat dangerous conditions of the meatpacking. And then there’s the matter of prices. Robots are expensive to acquire but they don’t negotiate for pay.

Even so the industry has a long way to go to fully automate production or match human ability for certain tasks. While meat processors are spending big on automation, this doesn’t mean humans are no longer needed.
