John Legend’s New Startup Takes on Yelp and Google

It’s Good, that’s the name of John Legend’s new tech startup — and it has superstar ambitions too.

The social app features food and travel recommendations from celebrities, along with your close friends. It aims to take on Yelp (YELP) and Google Reviews (GOOGL) as customers’ go-to source for tips, and it just raised $5 million in funding to do so.

Constructive Criticism

It’s Good aims to make online reviews more personal and positive. Yelp and Google Reviews can get swamped by thousands of reviews, making it difficult to find relevant feedback to make your decision. Plus, anyone can leave a review anonymously on these platforms, making them tougher to trust as an unbiased source of advice.

Legend’s platform, meanwhile, has no option to leave negative reviews. It’s Good only allows users to recommend businesses, and their feedback will only be visible to their friends.

If your friends aren’t on the platform, you’re still in luck. Users can also view recommendations from celebrities like Jessica Alba and David Chang.
