What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a prototype AI chatbot that has taken social media by storm through its ability to answer questions with surprisingly human-like written responses. Think Google Search (GOOGL), but on steroids. The AI not only searches the web for information, but provides solutions to complex questions, answers related follow-ups, and even admits when it gets something wrong.

ChatGPT, short for Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, has impressed the internet with its range of capabilities. It can coherently answer complex questions, write lines of code, and, like the sci-fi stuff of high school students’ daydreams, type out essay responses.

Where Did It Come From?

ChatGPT is the product of OpenAI, an independent research body founded by Elon Musk in 2015. Musk has since left the board and distanced himself from the start-up, claiming it is no longer the “open source and non-profit” company it was started to be.

OpenAI’s operations remain shrouded in mystery. The artificial intelligence company disclosed that it received $1 billion from Microsoft back in 2019, and has not reported its funding since. But, some reports say that OpenAI is valued as high as $20 billion, thanks to investments from the likes of Andreessen Horowitz, Bedrock Capital, and Tiger Global.

Replacing Humans?

ChatGPT may be exciting for fans of cutting edge technology, or students with essays due tomorrow that they have yet to start. But it’s raised concerns too – and not just from parent-teacher associations. Some believe that this level of sophisticated text-based AI could render several professions obsolete, including professors, programmers, and journalists.

However, in its current stage, the chatbot lacks several key elements that humans have, such as critical-thinking skills and ethical decision-making abilities. OpenAI has also stated that ChatGPT will sometimes present nonsensical answers as facts. So, be sure to use your own critical-thinking skills when chatting with this bot.

ChatGPT is certainly an impressive marvel of technology – a robot that can pose as 99% human. But, as usual, it’s that 1% that makes all the difference.
