Whether you’ve recently graduated from college or completed a master’s or professional degree, chances are good that you have student loans to repay.

In all my years working with graduate school candidates in the recruiting and career counseling fields, one of my favorite challenges has been helping them switch careers.  Lucky for me, this shift towards a new career path is a phenomenon that’s on the rise.  While I wouldn’t recommend changing careers on a repeated basis, I do believe that one or two thoughtful, well-planned transitions can actually be good for your career.

Each quarter, the SoFi Career Coaching Team sifts through a mountain of employment data in order to identify the latest hiring and salary trends for our Career Trends Report. Our aim? To gauge the demand for undergraduate and graduate level talent, provide insight into hiring practices across industries and regions, and help our members and other early stage professionals make informed decisions about career development strategy.

We recently announced the newest members SoFi Entrepreneur Program, a group of promising SoFi members who are starting businesses while also paying off student loans. As they progress through the program, we’ve asked each member to share important lessons they’ve learned on their road to startup success.

With the average student loan debt burden on the rise, it’s little wonder that loans often hold people back from pursuing their entrepreneurial goals. At SoFi, we’ve heard these stories time and again – friends, classmates and SoFi members who dream of starting their own businesses, but who feel trapped in a traditional job because they need to make that loan payment each month.
