Women Are Adapting Better to a Changing Job Market

On the Hunt
The U.S. job market has changed since the pandemic, when labor shortages were all over the headlines. Hiring slowed in July, while the unemployment rate, which remained below 4% for much of the past two years, ticked up to 4.3%. While that’s still pretty low in historical context, change is clearly afoot.
But not all Americans are responding the same to this changing labor landscape, and women jobseekers seem to adapt better than men.
Why the Divide?
One in five college-educated men under 25 are unemployed and not actively looking for work, per a Bloomberg report citing U.S. government data. Women graduates, meanwhile, have a higher and steadier labor participation rate than their male counterparts.
While the data suggests that young men are holding out for their dream positions, young women jobseekers appear more flexible, and therefore able to secure work even as hiring changes. Traditionally male-dominated industries, such as finance and technology, have been at the forefront of the hiring slowdown, which could affect men jobseekers.
Skills Over Salary
By prioritizing skill development over salary, young women who are choosing to stay in the job hunt may be setting themselves up better in the long run. After all, a first job after college needn’t be forever. A solid training ground to learn new and applicable skills, can prove valuable in their career down the line.
